Our strategy is to look at each project with an open mind to find the opportunities and constraints peculiar to the project in hand, and then to align and mould a blend of technologies for the optimum solution. This approach runs counter to the current common practice of deploying the same standardised solutions in all instances, all over the world, without adaption for local conditions and fortuitous project features; what we call the “one size ill-fits all” approach, which is tried, tested and proven to be mediocre. Significant energy-efficiency opportunities are being traded for efficiency of effort.
Frequently solutions are chosen on the basis of the tools that are readily available to the designers, even though a better solution might be offered for want of better design tools: this is the tail wagging the dog and is an anathema to us. We would always prefer to write or commission bespoke software to provide the necessary project-specific insight.
We understand that energy- and carbon-efficiency represent just one part of good design. We are equally enthusiastic about architectural sensitivity, maintainability, ease of installation and commissioning, user-satisfaction, longevity, timeliness, affordability, and so on.
Air-conditioning is a climate modifier - so you might expect air-conditioning solutions to vary significantly between different climatic regions of the world. In fact, the ubiquitous standard does not vary in principle between California to Boston to London to the middle-east. In each of these locations, as elsewhere, vapour-compression-cycle chillers are used to chill water to chill air to cool spaces.
In London we use air-conditioning to "manufacture" cool air, in many cases all year round, which for most of the time is warmer than the air right outside our windows. This has to be wrong.
Air-conditioning, in common with other system designs, has become too highly commoditised for the convenience of designers and manufacturers. Our approach is to take a step back and look at each project afresh, as an individual, with its own unique opportunities and offer a solution tailored to suit.
